Winter Books and a Simple Snowflake Craft

Snow days naturally invite read-aloud time, warm drinks, and hands-on creativity…which makes them perfect for gentle homeschool moments.

We paired a few favorite winter nature books with a simple snowflake craft, and it turned into one of those days that felt both restful and meaningful.

If you’re enjoying winter weather where you live or just wishing you were, these books and this activity are wonderful additions to a February homeschool rhythm.

We read several winter nature books throughout the week that helped guide our conversations and observations.
We especially enjoyed:
The Big Snow
Winter Sleep
Animals in Winter
A Field Guide to Winter
The Shortest Day
Make Your Own Paper Snowflakes

Each of these books sparked natural questions about snow, animal behavior, winter light, and patterns in nature.
You can find all of the winter nature books we’re using here in one place:

After reading, we made paper snowflakes together using Make Your Own Paper Snowflakes as a guide. What started as a craft quickly became a lesson in symmetry, patterns, and observation.

As the kids unfolded their snowflakes, we talked about how real snowflakes form with repeating patterns and why no two are exactly alike.
It was such a natural blend of art, math, and winter science.

We didn’t set out with a formal lesson plan. The snow, the books, and a pair of scissors led the way.
Between reading, observing the snowy woods, talking about animals, and creating snowflakes, the learning unfolded on its own.
Snow days don’t have to pause homeschool learning. They can become some of the most memorable lessons of the season.

If you’re looking for a simple winter activity:
Read a winter nature book together
Make paper snowflakes
Talk about symmetry and patterns
Observe the world outside your window
It doesn’t take much to turn a cozy winter day into a rich learning experience.
